It’s fair time again! The sights...the smells...the excitement of being enticed by the sweet smell of funnel cake and sticky cotton candy! The thrill of those heart pounding rides and good looking bull riders that just takes your breath away are something to look forward to every year but for years my favorite thing of all was seeing the fellow with the exotic sugar gliders!

The first time I saw him was at the Central States Fair on one of those hot muggy days where you felt like you where melting into the sidewalk. I had gone into one of the outlying buildings to escape the heat. I wasn't looking for anything in particular just a cool place out of the sun as I browsed down the aisles when suddenly I saw a crowd had formed around at a booth towards the end of the row. As I got closer I saw a small squirrel like critter jumping off of someones hand and gliding back to his owner behind the booth and crawled quickly back into the mans pocket and I heard everyone applaud with delight.

Yes, I had been smitten by sugar glider fever! Being a lover of all things fuzzy and cute I could not believe what I was seeing! I asked questions faster then the poor man behind the booth could answer them. I got to held the sugar glider on my hand and have him jump back to his owner and to say I was delighted would have been an understatement. Where do they come from? What do they eat? How long do they live? Do they really make good pets? Do they get along with other pets? Are they good with kids? Do they smell? The answers seemed believable enough. The man was friendly and seemed to know what he was talking about and the answers were exactly what I wanted to hear so like many I was eager and ready to put my money down not realizing that I was only getting part of the story.

With my moms insistence we decided to pass on adding a glider to our family that year but sometime later when I was older wiser and now the owner of our local pet shop Crazy Critters these sweet little bundles of joy once again caught my eye when I bought a pair that needed to be re-homed. My mom and I began to read, study and learn everything we could and made plenty of mistakes along the way which I’m ashamed to say my gliders often paid for this education! But learn we did and now we are the only local USDA licensed and inspected exotic dealer in the Black Hills. Here year round breeding, selling, and now rescuing many gliders that come from the fair.

What I know now is that Fair Sellers make their "bread and butter" on selling sugar gliders to uneducated buyers that purchase on a whim just because gliders are "cute", without doing any research on proper care requirements and needs. They prey on this type of customer, and the glider suffers for it...as do many of the owners that purchase at fairs before knowing any different, and end up losing their beloved pet. Crazy Critters is changing all this by providing health gliders at a great price along with vital information and local follow up long after the fair has packed up and left town!

Crazy Critters family goals is to provide the best education out there on exotic pets (Specifically on Sugar Gliders & Hedgehogs) so that you and your family never have to play any guessing games with their health, bonding, environment enrichment activities or what can be very confusing issues on various diet plans.

We look forward to being able to serve you as you explore the fascinating world of exotic pets. ~ Crazy Critters
